Today I met a friend that I haven’t seen in four years. He’s from South Korea but he lived over here for a few years. We swam together in the same club while he was here and he loved the laid back lifestyle we have in Ireland, the friends he had. However he ended up moving back to Korea when his dad couldn’t find a job here. The club has changed a lot since then. I’m not training a quarter as much and the faces are different. He is an amazing swimmer, a member of the Korean national team. That’s how he happened to be in Dublin, on a training camp and a lot of old faces met in the hotel they were staying in. It was more than just nostalgia though, these people were more like family. I saw them more than my family when I was training fully. We just spent the time in playful reminiscence of old time, talks of the future and false promises to meet again. You never really manage to catch up with people from your past and today’s rarity was a welcome blessing. Maybe I’m just being cynical.

Why do words have to be so important? I always say the wrong ones.

Love is a fire that burns, but is never seen;
a wound that hurts, but is never perceived;
a pleasure that starts a pain that’s unrelieved;
a pain that maddens without any pain; a serene
desire for nothing, but wishing her only the best;
a lonely passage through the crowd; the resentment
of never being content with one’s contentment;
a caring that gains only when losing; an obsessed
desire to be bound, for love, in jail;
a capitulation to the one you’ve conquered yourself;
a devotion to your own assassin every single day.
So how can Love conform, without fail,
every captive human heart, if Love itself
is so contradictory in every possible way?Luís de CamõesPosted on February 16, 2012 via Philosophy with 148 notes

In 1961, Leonid Rogozov, 27, was the only surgeon in the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. During the expedition, he felt severe pain in the stomach and had a high fever. Rogozov examined himself and discovered that his appendix was inflamed and could burst at any time. With a local anesthesia, he operated himself to remove the appendix. An engineer and a meteorologist assisted surgery.
